Gorgeous Germany - A Culture Hit

lauryn123keeley

Beer, pig knuckle, and a LOT of words I have no idea how to pronounce - this is how I remember Germany.

My first memory of Berlin was walking into the Centraal Station at 6pm, needing to get food, and being absolutely stumped by the all German self serve at Burger King. This would only be the start of me realising that I am hopeless at translating English.

After another long sleep, I was off on my next free walking tour. Berlin, despite being gloomy and freezing, really is a beautiful city with so much fascinating history. We walked through the Jewish Holocaust memorial, and saw all the gorgeous old buildings. After that, me and a few of the Australians I met on the tour did a bar crawl until 3 in the morning.

The next day I was up and ready to head to Sachsenhausen concentration camp. I learnt so much about World War II and was so fascinated at the beautiful way modern Germany had paid homage to their sad history. My tour group spent the day in tears as we saw first hand just how horrible the conditions were.

After this I was off to Cologne, where I spent the day on another walking tour looking at the beautiful ruins from the Holocaust. I, like every other tourist there, was thrilled to tour the free Cologne Cathedral and the many museums they have around the empty city. This was my last adventure before heading to London to start my internship.

Germany was the first place I found myself intrigued by the intricacies of culture. The fashion there was discreet, and almost dull. After reading a blog by Kim Berg about the German influencer style, it was clear to me that Germany stuck to clothes that wouldn't draw the eye. I wondered if this was influenced by how dull the city itself seemed during Winter. It made me wonder if London would be just as bland.
