Here we are. The end of an amazing 2 month long journey filled with laughs, friendship and all that other crap that makes travelling so important.
So much has changed in the last 3 months since I arrived back from my trip. I am now jobless, part time studying and all around pretty miserable back living the new 'normal' life. COVID has changed so much for so many people and it didn't stop at me.
One thing I am glad about though, is that whenever I have a bad day I can look back at all the memories I made during my time overseas. I am so lucky that I had the ability to fight my fears and do this.
Solo travelling is really scary! Some bad things did take place. I nearly got robbed in Amsterdam, was mildly assaulted in Berlin, got lost countless times without phone battery and spent a few nights crying on the phone to my family and friends. I don't regret any of it!
If there's anything I can recommend when solo travelling (especially as a woman) it's this;
Use common sense. Don't go out partying by yourself, watch your drinks, and go home if you feel unsafe.
Female only dorms in hostels are super fun! Even though they may be more expensive, it can definitely be worth the money to ensure you feel comfortable.
Make friends with other travellers as well as locals! You never know when you may need to crash at someones house or get a recommendation for dinner.
Take selfies! You may look a little silly, but if you don't do it you will come out of your trip with a lot of photos of pretty views, and no proof you were actually there!
Don't scare yourself out of doing the things you want to do. If you use safety measures and be smart, travelling is super safe and fun! You have to face your fears at some time, and it may as well be in a place like Europe.
I will always remember this trip. It affected me in so many ways and taught me so many things about myself. I am more confident, driven and aware now than I ever was before, and I place so much of that on doing it by myself. Good luck!
