Loveable London - Learning the Ropes

After a quick flight and a few bumps while finding the way to my new house, I have finally arrived.

My house for the next 6 weeks was the quintessential London experience. 5 people from 4 different countries stuck in a narrow 3 story brick building, which turned out to be so great that I got a tattoo representing my love for it.

My third day in I was off to Shoreditch to start my work at IPR London, a fashion and PR company that was preparing for London Fashion Week. This was so nerve wracking! What was I going to wear? What would my jobs be? Were they going to like me?

As it turned out, all the girls there were exactly like me - young, international and fashion obsessed!

While showing me the ropes of the showroom, I stared at the beautiful clothes from the multiple different brands they represented. From affordable brands such as Monki, American Vintage and even Australian representative Bec + Bridge, to high end designer brands such as Sadie Williams and St. Regga. Clothes as far as the eye could see!

After reading a little bit about the scene in London on the Belle & Bunty London Fashion Blog, I have spent a lot of time reflecting on all the trends I saw in the fashion capital. The post entitled 'Trench Coat Edit' reminded me of the first thing I learnt going into work; layers. Layers, layers, LAYERS! Unsurprisingly, walking to and from the tube in the middle of winter in London is frickin' freezing. I immediately learnt that the ideal outfit includes a thermal under shirt, a sweater, a coat and scarf; and potentially another jacket if its under 5 degrees that morning! As soon as you get into the office, you strip down to 2 layers and head towards the heaters.

I slowly started learning the different labels I was now working for, and simultaneously realised how very underwhelming my fashion choices are. I was recently reading an article in British GQ about why London is classified as the fashion capital of the world and one certain line really stuck out to me; 'In London, everyone is different and that means everyone can fit in.' Not only does this relate to ethnicity, age, sexual preferences and many more things that make London so special - but it also relates to fashion. I learnt very quickly that you can truly wear whatever you want in the city, and someone, somewhere will think its fashionable. Oh, the joys of fashion freedom.
